About Windows Shortcuts

Microsoft Windows runs on more than 72% of the world's desktop computers and remains the dominant desktop operating system in 2026. Windows has accumulated keyboard shortcuts over four decades — many of the Win+key combos (like Win+E for File Explorer, Win+L to lock the PC, Win+D to show the desktop) have been around since Windows 95, while newer additions like Win+V clipboard history, Win+Shift+S Snip & Sketch, and virtual desktops (Win+Ctrl+D / ← / →) were added in Windows 10/11. This reference card groups the most-used 90+ shortcuts across 7 functional areas: System, Files & Explorer, Window Management, Screenshot & Clipboard, Taskbar & Virtual Desktops, Accessibility & Ease of Access, and Common Text Editing. The full set is much larger — Microsoft documents roughly 200 distinct shortcuts in their official Windows keyboard shortcut reference. All entries here are taken directly from that official documentation at support.microsoft.com. How to use - Type any word in the search box (e.g. "snip", "virtual desktop", "screenshot") to filter rows. Search matches feature names and shortcut text. - Click any row's Copy button to put the shortcut on your clipboard — paste it into a doc, a chat, or a tutorial. - Click "Export PNG" for a printable wallpaper (2400×1140, 3 columns, A4 landscape). - Click "Export PDF" (or use your browser's print dialog) for a printable A4 landscape page. Tips - Win+L is the single most useful shortcut — lock your PC any time you walk away. Pair with Win+D to hide everything first. - Win+V clipboard history syncs across devices (Windows 10/11) when you sign in with a Microsoft account and enable "Sync across devices". - Most shortcuts work in any modern app, but a few (Win+E, Win+D, Win+L) are Windows-shell level and work everywhere. Why only Windows here? macOS users have a parallel tool at /tools/macos-shortcuts (Apple-specific shortcuts like Cmd+Space, Cmd+Tab, Mission Control). IDE shortcuts (VS Code, IntelliJ IDEA, etc.) live in their own tools. This separation keeps each tool focused and printable as one page.
